Most food and food packaging applications of nanotechnology will require Food Contact Notifications (FCN) and Food Additive Petitions (FAP) for FDA approval. Similar compliance and filings will be required before selling nano-enhanced food in the EU and other major markets. nanoTox has expertise and experience with these filings and can perform any safety testing under GLP quality conditions as required by regulators.

The food processing and food packaging companies are using nanotechnology to help extend shelf life of products, additives to help nutrient absorption, anti-microbial coatings in packaging, nanosensors for food quality control, nanoemulsion for fat reduction, controlling gas transmission through packages and many other applications.

Food safety is an important regulatory goal as well as a concern for the public. The EU is especially active in requiring companies to list nanomaterials in food labeling.  Activists in the US and EU are petitioning regulators to ban the use of nanomaterials in foods. Similar to the bans they were successful with GMO’s. Safety testing by nanoTox of nanotechnology in these applications can do much to dispel the fears consumer have about using nano in food and food packaging.
